Across a 15-day window, one participant's own WHOOP data was compared before and during AOI sessions. Recovery, heart-rate variability, resting heart rate and sleep all improved — even through a stretch of real-life stressors.

Despite a similar — or higher — training and lifestyle load, recovery outcomes improved substantially.

Recovery

The strongest change.

Recovery showed the largest improvement of every measured variable, and rebounded faster after hard days.

  • Average recovery rose from 56% to 74%.
  • Green recovery days increased from 2 to 8.
  • Multiple recovery scores reached 88–96%.
  • Recovery returned to green immediately after yellow or red days — a pattern not seen at baseline.

HRV

More adaptable.

Heart-rate variability improved in both its average and its peaks — generally associated with a more flexible, stress-adaptive nervous system.

  • Average HRV increased from 34 ms to 39 ms.
  • New HRV highs reached around 54 ms.
  • HRV recovered more rapidly following stress events.

Resting heart rate

Lower, steadier.

Resting heart rate dropped and stayed stable despite increased life stress and physical demands.

  • Average RHR decreased from 60 bpm to 56 bpm.
  • Multiple readings reached 52–54 bpm.
  • Elevations were mainly tied to alcohol and late bedtimes, not training.

Sleep

More consistent.

Sleep metrics improved across the window, and recovery gains held even when sleep duration wasn't optimal.

  • Sleep consistency rose from 65–75% to 84–93%.
  • Multiple nights reached 80–90%+ sleep performance.
  • Performance stayed stable even on high-strain days.

Strain vs recovery

Resilient under load.

The relationship between strain and next-day recovery changed. At baseline, hard days suppressed recovery; during AOI they didn't.

  • Multiple high-strain days (>14 strain) were followed by green recovery.
  • Recovery became less sensitive to strain load.
  • High activity didn't lead to prolonged suppression of recovery metrics.

Through real stressors

It held up where recovery usually drops.

Several events during the AOI window would normally be expected to lower recovery. They didn't.

Menstruation

Recovery stayed predominantly green rather than trending to prolonged yellow or red.

Alcohol + late bedtime

After a red recovery day, alcohol and a late night still rebounded to ~89–90% the next day.

Moving house

A physically demanding move brought fatigue and high activity — with no prolonged suppression of recovery.

General life stress

Stress was present throughout, yet recovery, HRV, sleep and RHR kept improving rather than declining.

In summary

A clear shift toward better recovery.

Compared with baseline, the AOI window was associated with higher recovery scores and HRV, a lower resting heart rate, better sleep consistency, improved resilience to strain, and faster recovery after physiological and psychological stressors.

Most notably, recovery stayed elevated through menstruation, physical fatigue, alcohol, late bedtimes and general life stress — conditions that historically would have been expected to reduce it.

This is a single-subject observation, so it cannot establish causation. But the objective WHOOP data is consistent with a potentially beneficial effect of AOI on nervous-system regulation, recovery capacity, sleep quality and physiological resilience.
